oldest in car accident

Postby Rose West » Wed Dec 24, 2014 12:48 pm

We got circuitous word that our oldest was in a car accident. She had her baby with her. We're headed down to the hospital they took her to, but it's an hour drive. As we cleared our own city limits the actual hospital called our house. Apparently she's had some injuries, they're both ok, and she was asking for me.

Thanks. Haven't seen them yet, but it doesn't sound like any serious injuries. Hospital has separate children's er that'she essentially a full city block away. How can it be good to separate a child from his mother like that?

Its worse than i originally thought. She's been in surgery 3 hours, now, and he went to unc chapel hill for mri to find out just how badly he's been injured. We caught Mass around the corner and now we're waiting to see her again.

Oh dear, yes.

As of today, Stache is able to be held, and in a carefully rigged wagon he was rolled around the floor by his other grandfather. My daughter was able to nurse him the other day when she was last there, and hopes to do so tomorrow, too.

Daughter is improving, and the surgery to straighten out her ankle is scheduled for Wednesday the 14th.

Well, our insurance agent kept her head. Someone from our daughter's insurance company (which is different) seemed to think they would try to do something stupid, but the policies will work exactly the way I was taught to expect it to work when my husband was in an accident a few years back.

Meanwhile, word is that Stache is ready to come home as soon as he proves that he doesn't intend to starve to death. He won't take anything by bottle, only a little solid food, which isn't particularly high-quality calories, and from Mommy, who can't be there all the time due to her own medical issues. So he's still on a feeding tube.

We're going to have to stay overnight for a couple of nights so they can reassure themselves that we're able to do all the feeding and other caretaking, plus Mommy has surgery next Wednesday which will mean drugs she can't pass to the baby. But the surgery is outpatient, so the bad drugs should only be for a day or so, and maybe we can have Stache home for good next weekend. (YAY!)

After that it will be up to three months of me sleeping over at MIL's house with Stache and his mom to help him with the night time feedings (he has to be carefully arranged every time someone picks him up or puts him down, and she has her own issues of how best to hold him due to her broken collar bone and legs), and during the day his aunties and other great grandma will be over there to provide back up. The worst weeks will be the first ones for both, but by then certain bandages and things get removed and it should steadily improve.

Stache has a fever bad enough that they've moved him to the PICU. We didn't go there today because mommy had pre-op appointments for her upcoming surgery on Wednesday in the opposite direction.

Please pray that this passes quickly.

Last Thursday, Stache spiked a fever and had to be put back in PICU. They found bacteria in his spinal fluid and blood, and put him on two antibiotics. By Saturday morning, he was better, so they moved him back to a regular room, but that doesn't mean the infection is gone.

The infection is now just being called meningitis, because it's in his spinal/brain fluid. It seems to be well-controlled by the two antibiotics they're giving him, since his fever hasn't been back in a couple of days and they're not giving him much tylenol and basically nothing else. He had a procedure today that will make his IV's easier and longer-term, because he has to get those antibiotics several times per day. Now that it's the way things are, I've decided to be glad this happened before we got him home, instead of having to go right back to the hospital and potentially letting the infection get a chance to do some damage. He may need to stay at the hospital for the next 4 to 6 weeks, or they may teach us how to do the IVs. We're hearing at least two stories on that subject.

Mommy has surgery Wednesday, very early, when there just might be an ice storm in this part of North Carolina. Once she has this, her recovery should really get going and her life should improve significantly, making it easier to bring Stache home. If you can spare a specific prayer, please pray that I95 and bigger roads through the city will be in good shape and that the hospital doesn't cancel their early morning surgeries. If we get cancelled, it's going to be really disheartening.

Sorry! With two "patients" home, it's been pretty busy at MIL's house, which is where we've set up camp.

Spent a long day in Chapel Hill (Wednesday the 28th) so Stache could do some follow up with his doctors. The first one took the splints off his legs. Yay for kicking anything and everything at will, and yay for caregivers not having to deal with ace bandaging that was under part of the diapers any more!
The infectious disease doctor says everything looks fabulous in regards to the meningitis, and that we can consider everything fine after he finishes his antibiotics this Sunday. So... assuming the paperwork is in order by then, the home nurse will come to remove the special IV line on Monday.
Which leaves the back brace. Today's Xrays indicate that he's doing well there, too. Assuming he continues as he's gone so far, the back brace can go away at the end of March.
All of his doctors remarked upon how cheerful and happy he seemed after a week at home. Although they aren't her doctors, they also remarked upon mommy's obvious improvement, too.
Mommy, meanwhile, is progressing as can be expected. Around the end of March we're supposed to be able to schedule when she gets to have the external frame around her left ankle removed.
Both should be starting physical therapy within the next couple of weeks. Life is improving. At some point, I'm going to have to look around and re enter my regular world, but for now I have to make sure the two patients continue to thrive.
