What is your take on the situation with the refusal of a building permit?

Val,

Jewish leaders have condemned a Sydney council for “rewarding terrorism” by refusing to allow a new synagogue at Bondi on security grounds.

The Waverley Council decision, backed by the Land and Environment Court of NSW, set a “dangerous precedent”, Jewish Board of Deputies director Vic Alhadeff said.

Waverley Council objected to large blast-walls proposed for the synagogue because of their visual impact, but also used the measures drawn up by those planning to build the synagogue to argue that if such security was required people moving around the place of worship could be at risk.

The head of the local Jewish community, Rabbi Yehoram Ulman, said the council and the court had effectively stifled freedom of religion and rewarded terrorism.

The council spokeswoman said: “The Waverley community is enriched by our diverse faiths and places of worship including our synagogues.”

“Waverley Council has a strong history of partnerships with the Jewish community and will continue to work closely with the Jewish community and Jewish organisations,” she said.

The area in question has a large Jewish population. Now, I'm no fan of Andrew Bolt. But he's pretty much on the mark here.

Sure, people may worry that the synagogue or Jewish school down their street could be blown up, sending stray shrapnel into their house.

But where does such thinking lead us? Doesn’t it mean no synagogue, Jewish school, Jewish charity or even prominent Jew can live in your street without building defences for all their neighbours and passers-by?

No one could afford that. And why punish the target rather than the source of the threat?

No mosque has been shut down for being the meeting place of jihadists. Why do we ban the synagogues that are the targets but not the mosques that are the threats? Taken to its logical conclusion, this decision means we’d force Jews to abandon a public presence, or keep to a ghetto so terrorists kill only them.

Shame on Waverley Council for telling Jews they’re on their own against a growing menace to their right to even exist.

The decision needs to be reversed. I'm confident it will be as saner heads prevail.

Val,

The applicants met with council this week and agreed the concerns could be addressed in a fresh application.

"All going well, we may have development approval in place as soon as December," Rabbi Yehoram Ulman said in a joint statement with the council.

Waverley Council acting general manager Cathy Henderson says both parties have committed to working together constructively.

"Both parties will follow the legal process for submission and assessment of the new development application and I feel confident that outstanding matters, including security, can be resolved," she said.

It seems Waverley Council, now realising its error, is trying to save face: "if you submit a fresh application, I'm sure we'll approve it".
