Which Style do you like?

Postby Kardinal » Mon Nov 11, 2013 6:02 pm

We've decided to change the default theme of the forum to something a little more distinctive. The current theme, while functional, is the stock theme that comes with every PHPBB. We're looking for something that makes us look like we take this system seriously.

We've found some themes that might be appropriate to try out for the forum and we would like feedback on the them. You can vote for two of them. The basic previews are below, and you can try them out from your Control Panel. The link to change your theme is here:

PS - if there's sufficient interest in styles other than the one we select, we can leave it as an option. It doesn't hurt anything to leave them there.

Coolbrown, although it looks a great deal like *cough* *cough* a certain other place. Fantastic new smilies, BTW! Thanks  :extrahappy:

Softbrown seems to be the frontrunner. What I don't like about Coolbrown, Softbrown, and RedNBlack, and frankly I don't think I would have suggested them if I knew it, was that they don't go edge-to-edge on the screen. They're limited in width, I think artificially. Personally, I HATE that.

If anyone finds any other styles they like, they're more than welcome to post them, by the way.

It's hard to tell how they actually work, based upon the way they're rigged. :/

I hadn't considered the width thing. That could be an issue with mobile devices.

Rigged? I'm not sure I follow.

As for how they work, try them out! They're all loaded as options for the style you use. Right now I'm using RedNBlack...

As for mobile devices, with Tapatalk being free now, I would strongly recommend using that instead of any mobile browser here.

Yeah, if I'm rolling quarters to afford the orthodontist, I really can't afford tapatalk.

They show the formats on a screen along with a lot of text and information, but I'd have to download the format to actually see what it looks like on my device. Is that what you're saying to do?

I'm sorry I wasn't clear.

Tapatalk is now free. 100%. $0.00. Fully featured. No cost.
IOS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tapatal ... d307880732
Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... o.activity

Note the cost: Free.

No download is required to try any of the styles.

To test out the styles above, just select them in your control panel. The link is below:
"My board style" is the label:

Ah. I'd been checking tapatalk every few months to see if they'd gone free yet, but it's been a while since I last looked. Thanks, I'll probably jump right on that, since my usual device these days is a galaxy tab with a bluetooth keyboard. Apps tend to take up less MB than pages on the internet browser. When the internet gets spotty, apps tend to slip through easier, too.

And I see how to change the format in the forum, too, now. I thought there was some way to do it through the links you provided above, which was what was confusing me.

You know what? I went to subsilver2 and I like it. I think it's what we had on the old forum.

The style on the old forum was actually a custom style made just for Catholic Online. Well, the first incarnation. After the Great Outage of Early 2013, they switched to stock Subsilver, presumably after they upgraded.
